Myth to check
A published weight-loss result predicts my own result.
Rethink that tirzepatide assumption
A trial tells you what happened to a group under its study conditions. It cannot promise the same result for an individual.
The adults in SURMOUNT-1 had no diabetes; they had obesity, or were overweight and had a related health problem.
At 72 weeks, average weight loss across the tirzepatide groups ranged from 15.0% to 20.9%, against 3.1% with a dummy shot.
The groups received different strengths. The study included regular visits and support for food and activity changes, and the drug maker funded it.
A dummy shot is a comparison treatment without the study drug.
In SURMOUNT-4, people first received tirzepatide for 36 weeks, then continued it or switched to a dummy shot.
Over the next 52 weeks, the group switched to a dummy shot gained 14.0% of body weight on average.
The group continuing tirzepatide lost another 5.5% on average over that same period.
The percentages start from each person’s weight when the groups split, after the first treatment period. They do not start from the weight before treatment.
For an arithmetic example, start with 200 pounds at the split. A 14% gain means 28 pounds added; a 5.5% loss means 11 pounds lost. These numbers explain the percentages, not what any one person will gain or lose.
The finding supports a conversation about a longer care plan. It does not decide that plan for you.
The FDA, the US medicine agency, records approval for specific product uses.
As of 26 September 2026, tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) had different approved uses on their labels.
A promising trial in another condition does not add that condition to a drug’s approval.
The maker’s cash terms for Zepbound recorded on 26 September 2026 ranged from $299 to $699 per month.
That range covers the KwikPen, which holds several injections, and single-dose vials, small bottles each holding one injection.
The strength written on the prescription and whether refills are on time affect the price.
The government price directory displays a starting offer; it does not turn that offer into a flat price for every strength.
A drug-price record also does not include whatever a care service charges separately.

After the groups split, people who stopped tirzepatide gained weight on average. Those who continued lost more on average. The study does not decide an individual’s treatment plan.
