Compare online care and in-person care by asking who assesses you and how follow-up works.
Myth to check
A real assessment always needs a visit in a room.
Rethink that tirzepatide assumption
Online care can provide the same medical checks as a visit in a room. If you need tests or a physical exam, those still need to be arranged.
Telehealth means medical care by video, phone, or messages with the person treating you.
The state medical boards’ guidance expects the same medical checks online as in a room.
Ask how your health history, questions, and any needed exam will be reviewed.
A first tirzepatide visit can be online under the general federal rules checked on 26 September 2026.
Those federal rules do not require a first visit in a room for medicines outside the controlled-drug lists.
Controlled drugs are medicines the government tracks closely because they can be misused.
Tirzepatide was not on those federal lists at that check.
State rules still apply, and an assessment may need an exam or tests.
Rules checked on 26 September 2026 require your care professional to have permission to treat you in the state you are physically in when the visit takes place.
HHS, the US health department, explains that a doctor or other licensed health professional needs a licence or other lawful permission for that state.
Ask about your location for the actual visit, especially if you will be travelling.
Ask who answers medical questions, how to reach them, and how an in-person exam would be arranged if needed.
The medical boards’ guidance calls for a referral or arranged tests when the assessment needs more than a remote visit can provide.
